Cocoa ~ Make Your Own Chocolate

How does the chocolate get into the cocoa and how does the cocoa get into the chocolate?

For thousands of years, cocoa has been prepared - always as a drink. Xocolatl (pronounced: Schokolatl) is what it was called, and it became known by many other names as the "bitter water." Sometimes round cocoa discs were prepared until they were thrown into hot water. Even today, some Maya women form these discs. Recently, chocolate has been made in bars in Europe.

Why? How? How is it done?

Together, we first embark on a journey of discovery - from the Peruvian rainforest to the kiosk at the campsite. After the discovery, we traditionally roast and shell the cocoa beans, then grind them between two stones into a paste. With that, the cocoa is ready to be shaped into discs or added to water - for the bitter yet so sweet drink.

This sounds like a quick process. It is not. Each step takes its time and active hands to, for example, free the beans from their skin. Every step has its joys and gifts like, for instance, the steam during roasting. In the end, everyone is rewarded with cocoa.
