Ka-kauuu ~ Make your own cocoa

How does the chocolate get into the cocoa, and how does the cocoa get into the chocolate?

Cacao has been prepared for thousands of years—always as a beverage. It was called *Xocolatl* (pronounced: *shok-o-latl*), and this "bitter water" became known by many other names. Sometimes, round cacao cakes were prepared, ready to be dropped into hot water. Even today, some Maya women still shape these cakes. It is only relatively recently that chocolate has been produced in bar form in Europe.

WHY? HOW IS IT DONE?

First, we embark on a journey of discovery together—from the Peruvian rainforest to the campsite kiosk. After our exploration, we roast and peel the cacao beans using traditional methods, then grind them between two stones into a paste. The cacao is then ready to be shaped into cakes or added to water—creating a drink that is bitter yet wonderfully sweet.

This might sound like a quick process, but it isn't. Each step takes time and requires active hands—for instance, to remove the skins from the beans. Every step brings its own joys and rewards, such as the aromatic steam rising during roasting. In the end, everyone is rewarded with a cup of cacao.
